Literary Biography: a publisher specializing in children's literature, instructional games, and teaching methodologies, John Marshall published the works of Mary Ann and Dorothy Kilner, Ellenor Fenn, Sarah Trimmer, and Lucy Peacock, among others. Inspired by Anna Laetitia Barbauld in several ways, Marshall also began publishing graduated readers (books that become harder as the reader progresses) and using larger margins and fonts.
Impact on Children's Literature: by publishing well over 100 children's book, several teaching aids, and four children's periodicals (including The Family Magazine; or, a Repository of Religious Instruction and Rational Amusement, edited by Sarah Trimmer during its run in 1788-1789), Marshall both popularized the media and made it more accessible. He also published assorted picture books, and contributed to the development and use of colored pictures in books.
